What is an Event?

ThreatSims events are individual cyber ranges hosted on the ThreatSims platform.

Each event is a unique environment with its own enrollments, content, and scoreboard.

Typically, the following types of events are hosted on the ThreatSims platform:

  • CTF Contests
  • Recruitment Assessments
  • Training Events
  • Classroom Sessions

Participants can join an event to interact with the challenges, score points, and compete with other participants.

Participation Types

There are two different types of participation for events:

  • Team: Participants can form teams with other participants. Each participant can only be in one team.
  • Solo: Participants compete against themselves.

Depending on the event, the participation type can be different and mentioned in the event details.

For team events, you can also participate as a solo participant if you don’t have a team to join.

Challenge Content

Challenges are the core of an event. They are the content that participants can interact with and score points for.

ThreatSims supports all standard CTF challenge types. Our challenges are usually grouped into series of challenges that are related to each other.

Each challenge series is delivered through a specific challenge type:

  • Downloadable Challenge: A challenge that is delivered through a downloadable file.
  • Container Challenge: A challenge that is hosted in a remote docker container.
  • Machine Challenge: A challenge that is hosted on a remote virtual machine.

More on how to play these challenges is available in the Event Challenges section.

Scoreboard

Depending on the event participation type the scoreboard is either team or individual based.

The highest scoring participant or team is the winner. In case of a tie, the winner is the first team or participant to solve the last challenge.
